Łukasz Sobiecki (born in 1981) in May 2011 during a routine eye exam learned there was a lesion in his eye that made retina to detach and as a result his eyesight started to worsen. Following additional examinations, among others at the Clinical Department of Ophthalmology and Ocular Oncology in Krakow, the diagnosis of choroidal melanoma was established. For a qualified IT engineer for whom the work is a passion such diagnosis along with prospect of vision loss appeared a nightmare. Together with his family they started to look for the best way of treatment. They managed to get in touch with Charite University Hospital in Berlin where he was offered treatment using the advanced technique of proton beam therapy. That kind of therapy was not accessible in Poland, it could be performed only at some sites in the world. The cost of therapy was high, but thanks to people of great hearts from PZU foundation Łukasz was able to receive therapy in Berlin. In the period from therapy completion until May 2014 everything seemed like a fairy tale. Łukasz was a happy husband. With his wife they missed only a child that they had been longing for a long time. At last they gone out with the bang! In February 2014 they learned they were going to be parents. Two months later during follow-up exam doctors found a metastatic melanoma lesion in Łukasz’ liver. Following referrals the prompt decision was made to excise the lesion with margin. Despite excellent care Łukasz received at the Department of General Surgery and Transplantology led by prof. Marek Krawczyk the disease kept relapsing following each subsequent abdominal surgery. Up to now Łukasz has undergone five of such complex surgeries. At the moment his state does not allow to perform any invasive surgery and the latest examination results indicate relapsed peritoneal lesions causing ascites that had already been surgically removed. For the time being all that can be done is to control symptoms with strong diuretics.

At this stage the only method to stop the malignant process to spread and even to bring the disease back seems advanced treatment with pembrolizumab that can be performed at the University of Chicago Hospital. So far the medication has not been reimbursed in Poland. Its costs reaches 380 thousand USD – the sum unreachable for Łukasz’ family.

For that reason they decided to appeal for help to people of great hearts asking for financial support for that therapy.

Progressing disease and time do count against in these circumstances.
